Even with the continuous developments done on GPS and GPS devices, it is primarily used for tracking applications. Using a GPS device enables a person to determine his current location as well as the location of several other vehicles in real time, without them needing to relay any information. This application was proven useful in tracking children, criminals, police and emergency vehicles.

GPS receivers are also known for their navigation features. GPS mapping applications are used to determine the shortest possible route that leads to a target location.
