How to Update Your GPS Maps
Why should you routinely update your GPS maps? New roads are built every day. From time to time, buildings and properties change their owners or tenants. Establishments like banks, ATM machines and gas stations may periodically transfer to other locations. Business addresses and other points of interests change from time to time. Clearly, as the day goes on, there is a substantial change happening in the actual layout or map of a particular community, town, city or country. If you are a constant traveler, you need to keep track of these changes to avoid unwanted delays due to roadblocks, closed roads and to new routes to get to your destination in a lot less time.
Regardless of the brand and model of your GPS device, the steps followed when you update your GPS maps are fairly easy and similar. You will need to have your computer with Internet connection, your GPS receiver and its connecting cables to do this task.
First thing you need to do is connect your GPS receiver to your personal computer. Turn on your GPS and plug it into your computer using the interface cable provided with your device. Insert the cable to the USB slot of your computer. Next, open your Internet browser and go to your GPS brand's website. Some websites would require you to sign up and register your GPS device, in which way you will need to use the serial number codes of the device. Signing up to your brand's website actually makes it easy for you to access new map updates through notifications sent through your email address. After registering your device on the website, you may be routed to the page where you can order an update DVD for your GPS maps. After settling the payment requirements, you will have to wait for your DVD package. As soon as you receive your update DVD, pop it into your computer. Again, connect your GPS receiver to your computer. Locate and open the map file and click on go to the main menu. Locate the update firmware and click it on. After the firmware update is finished, click OK. Unplug the USB cable connector of your GPS and turn it off to allow the firmware to reset your GPS. After a while, you will need to turn the device back on and access its language and time interface for other necessary adjustments. In case the update CD requires a website monitored update, you will need to enter a product key found on the back of the DVD case. After successfully feeding the code, the software will automatically launch and begin updating the maps. Just follow through the instructions provided by the DVD. After the firmware has finished running, click OK. To get your hands on the latest map update and other GPS updates available for your GPS receiver, GPS manufacturers encourage you to regularly log in to their website. This way, you get to be informed of the latest news; nits and bits on how to optimize, enhance or tweak the service of your already dedicated GPS device.
