For those on dry land, finding the best PC GPS navigation software doesn’t require you know the difference between the types of maps. However, since you have more memory available, you can often find programs with extra information when you use the PC rather than a handheld device.

Some of the land based PC GPS navigation software programs include ALK CoPilot/TravRoute CoPilot, DeLorme Street Atlas, Destinator, Centrafuse, Garmin nRoute, iNav iGuidance, Mapfactor, Microsoft AutoRoute, MicroSoft Streets and Trips, MicroSoft MapPoint, Navigon NavigatoR, Odyssey Navigator and Sygic. Not all GPS map software offer worldwide mapping, so make sure you check the locations available from the companies first.

Truckers and others that travel for a living find that PC GPS navigation software often provides more of the information they need than the handheld GPS models. Some of them include HazMat specific routes, state mileage reports for fuel tax reporting, enhanced 3D Map displays including moving maps, lane assistance for freeway splits or exits and trip estimation costs based on the fuel efficiency of the vehicle and local prices.

While handheld GPS devices are useful for the recreational traveler, the GPS map software is the workhorse for those who travel for a living. PC software offers many benefits and is normally far less expensive if you already travel with a PC than their handheld counterparts.

Whether you travel the waters or the roadways, the PC GPS navigation software may prove far more beneficial if your route is complicated or your purpose requires more features than the GPS devices offer.
