Magellan Meridian GPS
A Review

For individuals that demand top performance and quality the one product that stands out from the rest as a leader in innovation and technology is the Magellan Meridian GPS.

Serious and committed bikers and hiker enthusiasts are well aware that few other GPS products can even come close.

The Magellan Meridian GPS receiver has 2 MB RAM that is already part of the package and it comes loaded with a base map for the world region where it is purchased. If you purchase one of the North American models you will quickly realize that you are shown the secondary roads, highways and cities.

The models for the European market display both cities and major roads, and all of these receivers come with the cable hookups necessary to connect and download new maps and updates from a computer.

When you compare the hand-held units that are available it is obvious that this GPS is much more comfortable and fits into even a smaller hand with ease. The controls and screen have a backlighting feature that enables them to be seen in low light conditions and the layout of the controls makes it easy to program the receiver.

A much appreciated standard feature included is the back-track feature. If you are ever unsure of where you are the unit's special "backtrack" feature makes it easy to trace your movements to the last known landmark or waypoint and regain your bearings.

All of the movements that you made along the terrain are stored in memory banks and they can easily be pulled up and reviewed whenever you need to do so. The Meridian’s backtracking program has an accuracy to pinpoint locations within a radius of 3 meters which is far superior to competitors on the market.

Eight different screen displays available that you can use as you get the directions and routes that you need. All but one of these screens can be customized easily, and you always have the dedicated screen that shows you which direction is true north.

There is a slot that accepts SD cards inside the battery compartment. This enables you to expand the memory of your Magellan Meridian GPS receiver with a number of additional routes and maps.

It might be helpful to remember that the time shown on the display of these units is always accurate because it is transmitted from the satellite's atomic clock, but it does not automatically change for daylight saving's time. This means that you will have to make this manual timing adjustment twice a year.
