Magellan Meridian GPS

The Magellan Meridian GPS is one of the older GPS receiver devices that gained popularity for its ruggedness and strong protection against harsh elements making it ideal for serious navigators.

It falls under the cost-efficient GPS devices category, yet offers excellent tracking capabilities with an accuracy to under or equal to 10 feet. The U.S. Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) provides assistance to its tracking along with 12 GPS satellites.

GPS devices have evolved since they were first introduced as small portable devices exclusive for travelers. Nowadays, GPS devices have a sleeker look and are powered by touch-screens to make them more accessible for general audiences particularly regular drivers.

But these devices tend to do more than just GPS navigation and have bigger screens to make it easier for drivers to plan routes and track their current location. This makes these devices more expensive and caused simpler devices like the Magellan Meridian GPS to be more affordable than the others making it a good choice for travelers.

Features

The Magellan Meridian GPS has a 2 MB database that includes highways, major roads, interstates, waterways, major cities, and airports across North America. The database is expandable and street-level maps can be optionally downloaded to an SD card that can be used on the device.

Users can save up to 20 routes and 500 waypoints to help get around the area. 2,000 track-points can also be saved which can be good for backtracking. With the Save Track-to-Route feature, difficult tracks are simplified to make them a lot easier to follow.

The Magellan MapSend software isn’t included in the package, but can be optionally installed to transfer all the saved routes and waypoints to a PC unit.

It is highly customizable offering seven different displays that highlight the map and view the compass and speedometer as well as other useful information including visuals of the heading, speed, bearing, direction, and ETA.

There are twelve coordinate systems that are also built-in to the device with 76 datums including Universal Transverse Mercator, Latitude and Longitude Statistics, and the Military Grid Reference System.

Other interesting features include its ability to tell users the different moon phases and times when the sun rises and sets in the user’s current location. It is also possible to check the current date and time in any spot in the world. Fishermen will find the Meridian useful too in finding the location of fish in the area.

Another technology that is part of the Meridian is the NorthFinder technology that shows the user’s direction whether he or she is in motion or standing still.

Conclusion

The Magellan Meridian GPS is still a surprisingly useful and affordable device with an intuitive interface to guide travelers through difficult routes. It comes in several languages and includes a free manual along with a wrist strap and two free AA batteries. It has been tested to meet the IEC-529 IPX7 specifications making it a true waterproof device that is capable of floating on water.
