The popularity of GPS devices has increased manifold in the last two decades. This can be attributed to two reasons. One it helps people to know where they or their loved ones exactly are at any given point in time and two , owning a GPS device adds up to your style quotient.

Here are some of the reasons why:

  2. The PDA has a bigger screen than most of the handheld GPS devices, which allows you to see things more clearly.
  3. The PDA allows you to use more GPS programs and features as compared to stand-alone handheld systems.
  4. You have a wider choice when it comes to the support for GPS. You are just not limited to the GPS manufacturer but also can explore other options.
  5. Generally, you tend to pay less for all kinds of maps and third party tools in such arrangements.
  6. You can use additional memory and features for recording and other purposes.
  7. The unit can be mounted for better visibility.
  8. Last but not the least, you can use and feed in your own maps into the PDA.

The Magellan GPS Companion gives you all the advantages mentioned above and even more. This GPS device can be used for just walking or even when driving from one place to another.

It is compatible and fits into the serial port of Palm 500 series. Along with the GPS companion, you also get a 12-parallel-channel GPS receiver. It is equipped with Street Finder Deluxe travel navigation software by Rand Mc Nally. The NAV software by Magellan can be downloaded to your PDA. These are some of the softwares which can help you in creating and uploading all kinds of driving directions and custom maps for all the US locations sans Alaska.

You also get features like route management, way point, digital compass and an analog speedometer in the NAV software which comes with the Companion. This device comes with a complete map set CD-Rom and is completely compatible with all kinds of Palm applications which use GPS data.

The PDA's expansion card can be used for map downloads since the Companion uses a serial port to attach and communicate with the PDA device. You can also avail the option of using an additional 12 V power cable which comes with a built in battery charger for your travels. The best part about this GPS companion is that it won't drain the internal battery of your PDA because it uses two AAA batteries.
