Lowrance Marine GPS
The Family of High Definition Fishfinders

Any of the Lowrance marine GPS High Definition Systems won't disappoint those who have experience with the older marine GPS models. Their most expensive models wrap a huge set of features in a very friendly interface.

Many cars are finally being outfitted with reliable GPS devices made by some of the most recognizable manufacturers in the industry. These devices really deliver showing proof that accidents can be prevented and drivers can reach their destinations faster while saving money by using up less fuel. Boats are receiving the treatment as well with Lowrance capitalizing on creating the best Lowrance marine GPS devices available.

History

Lowrance had a great start when they released their full size chartplotter GPS devices having the GlobalMap name. These devices had nice high-resolution displays that can double as a radar as well and come with powerful connectivity features that allow them to be connected with other Lowrance devices to share sonar and other network data.

All of these devices have been replaced by the newer Mark & Elite Series which boast better one-handed control, higher position accuracy, and a simpler navigation interface. A series of high-definition devices were introduced as well and now have the spotlight in marine GPS technology.

Models Available

All of the high definition Lowrance marine GPS models are quite pricey with the HDS-5m being the most compact and most affordable priced at nearly $600. There are 3 other variations of this device with screens each measuring 5, 7, 8, and 10 inches, respectively.

Any models that have an "m" at the end signify that they multifunction devices having the functions of both a fishfinder and chartplotter. Lowrance marine GPS that do not have an "m" are actually a bit more expensive with each model having a built-in broadband sounder, giving it sonar capabilities. All of the other features are similar to the ones offered by the multifunction devices.

A special unit that shares the same price as the HDS-5m is the HDS-5x which is described as a multifunction echosounder that lacks other features. There are no larger versions of this model.

Common Features

All of the models sport a nice crystal-clear display that allows people to see the shallow water in much greater detail. The Deep-Water performance is noticeably better and more targets can be seen without the noise, making them excellent for broadband fishfinding.

The charting features are improved as well with better map detail, thanks to the higher screen resolution and NEW Insight USA technology which uses contour shading. Thousands of lakes across the US are enhanced in quality and show the shorelines and contours with amazing detail. Compatibility is still retained as it can be used with all Navionics chartcards.

Some of the nice extras include a built in LWX-1 Radio Smart Antenna which provides useful radio services that can help check the weather. The device can even be plugged into regular sound systems via 3.5 mm jack to listen to other entertainment services offered via radio like sports. The Sirius Mariner and Voyager Weather Service Package offers easier tracking of the weather complete with forecasts and tropical storm watches.
