How to Choose a GPS

Have you been asking how to choose a GPS? These devices have become an important part of any commuter or traveler's life.

Today, civilians enjoy GPS devices as they guide them to the right place no matter where they are in the world. Aside from traveling, such devices are equally useful to hikers, fishermen and pilots.

With the number of types and brands of GPS devices, choosing one became quite a daunting task. Familiarizing yourself with the main types which could be helpful in this regard.

Basic Handheld GPS

  • The basic handheld receiver is one of the most common and most preferred types. Handy and compact, it is generally cheaper than others, costing around $100-$200. The size and wearability of handheld GPS makes it easy to carry around.

  • Other handheld facilities include built-in compass, altimeter, barometer, elevation and sea level, unit converters and other useful navigation tools. It even doubles as a digital watch. Just like other advanced models, it can accurately determine your current location and calculate your distance traveled. Some models are even equipped with features that allow retracing and planning of routes, complete with records of points of interests.

Handheld Mapping GPS

  • The handheld mapping GPS receivers are the kind of device that is enabled to display more detailed and precise maps, which you can upload from your computer. One of the great advantages of this device is that it is given better display resolution, making it easier for its user to reflect on the displayed preloaded maps while planning or retracing routes.

  • Another point for design is its being customizable. You can name it, create your own route and set other preferences with this GPS' features. The only thing that might limit its functionality is its memory capacity. As a solution, always bring backup memory cards to ensure continuous or uninterrupted applications.

Automotive GPS

  • Automotive GPS is arguably the most popular type of device out there. As the name implies, this is the kind of device that is made bigger and given more application features to complement the needs of daily commuters. Automotive devices are usually given advanced features such as voice activated inputs and voice instructions, leading its users in the right direction while on the road.

Other Features

  • In addition to types, there are features that you should look for. Such features may be helpful or unnecessary to your need for GPS assistance. For instance, the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) technology feature makes a particular device accurate (+/-3 meters).

  • Multi-channel designs enable the device to lock in your position faster even through tough terrains. If you intend to use this device for your boating or fishing adventures, then make sure that it is made waterproof or water resistant.

Mapping or Non-Mapping

  • Consider whether or not you need a mapping or non-mapping receiver.

    • Non-mapping receivers usually include a plotter screen that displays overhead waypoints, points of interest and routes.

    • Mapping GPS receivers give total map control with real land and sea maps, marine navigation and other navigation features. Take note of these features and determine if they are important to you.
