How do I Find the GPS Coordinates of a Location?

How do I find the GPS coordinates of a location is perhaps the very first question asked by all GPS users. First time users may need to study and understand the use of their device from the user's manual to fully enjoy all the features.

For beginners, it is sometimes a challenge to actually locate a point of interest or a particular place using a GPS device. It is just sensible that you need to find the coordinates of a location before traveling. To answer this question, you need to understand how GPS devices produce coordinates.

First, your GPS receiver needs to acquire satellite signals to function properly. This explains why the device seldom works well inside buildings as the structure shields its high frequency satellite transmissions. Hence, the first thing to do when you are to find the GPS coordinates of a location is to position yourself in a place with a fairly level area and with a full horizon.

Assuming you know the relative geographical position of the place, you are looking for in a particular country, your GPS device needs to establish a list of satellites that are currently located above that horizon.

GPS receivers are designed to be able to approximate orbits of the GPS satellites and even provide the local time of that particular location. Some GPS devices may even provide images of the positions of the satellite within its horizon, positioned right above you.

As the device acquires satellite signals, it will establish GPS receiver and satellite connection and display the signal strength. If you are to determine the coordinates of a place or your present location, you need to input it in the device by using the pointer (depending on the model you use).

Now, the device will need to receive signals from three satellites to perform rough calculations of the geographical position and inform you about the longitudinal and latitudinal data of the place that you are locating.

It may also provide you with estimates of your distance between you and your target location. Some GPS devices may even provide you with other information like altitude above sea level.

As you prolong the session, the GPS receiver improves its accuracy in terms of distance measurements due to more precise averaging of pre-determined distances. After a few minutes, if the receiving or transmission condition is ideal and there are more satellites in view, the accuracy of the produced coordinates will stabilize at around 15 meters.

With your needed coordinates at hand, you may now start moving around with your GPS device. Even as you move, you may be amazed to know how fast the device tracks and follows your movement. In indicating the directions in which you need to proceed, it doubles as a reliable compass that provides you with directions in degrees.

There are many devices that have features that enable them to store a series of momentary positions. This is to record the route you are taking or to produce a graphic display of the route you are taking. This also eliminates the need to recalculate the distance and coordinates of the place during your next visit.

Also, following your old route will keep you from getting lost in your tracks, which lessen your chances of getting stranded or lost in the wilderness or sea.
