GPS Wrist Watch
What's the deal?

Is a GPS wrist watch really as useful as they say?

The average individual can now go out with several worn accessories, some gadgets in the pockets, and possibly a laptop or netbook in the bag.

GPS devices weren't very common to the average traveler around town until the technology was implemented in many phones which turned out to be useful in certain situations. Now the GPS is making its way inside wristwatches as well and that may raise a few questions. For certain people, they can be a convenient multipurpose accessory.

What do they do?

The function of the GPS wrist watch varies depending on the type. Some GPS watches are capable of supplying directions in unfamiliar areas so you can find your way back on track. Other GPS watches log location statistics at a certain interval where the data is stored on a database where it can be retrieved later from a computer. The GPS watches for athletes often have a heart rate monitor that can be useful while getting into workout programs.

In addition to these features, most GPS wristwatches feature the same timekeeping functions present in many sports watches. The added GPS functions can make some watches a bit heavy. Otherwise, they make great replacements for standard sports watches.

Why are they getting so Popular?

Parents find these watches very useful in tracking children. It is done by having the child wear the watch in the most comfortable way. Then the watch is locked so it won't be removed.

Several settings can be set for the watch to send a message to a mobile device if the wearer goes out of a defined zone. It can also be set to alarm if the watch is forcibly removed. The GPS features may also help guide lost children back home.

Joggers are also realizing how useful these watches are when they get lost while jogging long distances. Like regular GPS devices, the GPS wrist watch can calculate the fastest route step by step to get back on course. The heart monitor and other training features makes it popular amongst athletes.

What type should I get?

If the GPS watches that are available are too heavy to wear, try to find a watch where the receiver is separate. Timex makes some GPS watches which are good choices if you like Timex's sporty style and want to have basic GPS features. For kids, any watch with surveillance features is fine as long as the design is attractive enough for kids to keep it on.

You should be able to find some GPS wrist watches that cost around $150 or more in online stores like Amazon.com. It is better to check the local stores first so you can wear the watch yourself and see if it is something that is worth wearing if you go jogging often. You can also wait for new models as new features may be implemented as they continue to grow popular.
