GPS Tracking Watch
Keeping Track of...

There are some individuals like athletes that prefer lighter functionality, but better portability which is why the GPS tracking watch is made by various GPS manufacturers.

GPS technologies are currently appearing in a multitude of watches to encourage travelers, explorers, athletes, and even ordinary drivers to embrace and use the technologies for their own benefit and convenience. The devices that are full of navigation features often have bigger screens and may have other functions implemented to make the product more attractive.

Functions

From its name, a GPS tracking watch is designed for tracking purposes where location data is transmitted to GPS satellites.

These satellites relay the data to an online database so it is accessible by authorized individuals. Because watches in general have small screens, you won't be able to see any maps or statistics.

However, many GPS watches have similar features to sports watches since they are meant primarily for athletes to use. This means that you can see the time, use stopwatch functions, and other features.

Kinds

The most common tracking device is the data logger which keeps track of your position at regular intervals. This data is usually stored in its internal memory and uses the USB interface so the data can be transferred to computers and other devices.

Some GPS tracking devices are data pushers which track statistics in real-time and transmits these statistics to a remote database. Any statistics for tracking purposes such as distance, direction, and speed are included. Many people that care about surveillance and security use data pushers.

Data pullers have a similar purpose, but function more like GPS transponders where they are always turned on so users can query the data any time. This is useful for tracking stolen items.

Advantages and Other Uses

One of the biggest advantages of a GPS tracking watch is its reliability and accuracy in tracking. This makes these watches decent for tracking children. Children that wear these watches can treat them like ordinary watches. The GPS functions will only trigger if the child moves out of a zone such as the house. It will then send a text message to a mobile device reporting the location and other statistics.

The other advantages depend on the model of the watch. Some of the watches may be equipped with a heart rate monitor while others have slightly larger displays to show meaningful information. With the only downside being the weight, these watches are very useful.

Manufacturers

Timex is a famous manufacturer for watches and they have recently jumped on the GPS bandwagon to add GPS functions to their famous sports watches. Garmin is more on the portable GPS device side, but is also making several models of their own. Suunto takes a unique approach by eliminating the weight disadvantage. Their watches come with a separate receiver.

The price of an average GPS tracking watch may seem unsettling, but if you think about how useful these watches are, it is better to get one rather than a separate watch and GPS tracker.
