There are special sports watches made by dozens of manufacturers throughout the years. Many of these watches are digital and have different time tracking features to aid in their workout programs or athletic activities. With GPS devices appearing in phones and other portable gadgets, certain watches are being equipped with the technology as well to further bring convenience to the athlete. It is very important to choose a good model since all models are a bit more expensive than some of the feature-rich sports watches that lack GPS. Suunto t3The Suunto t3 is one of the budget GPS running watches that come out at around $170. For its price, it is a great watch for its versatility. Runners, skaters, bikers, and other people who are into activities can find this watch useful as long as the small display is tolerable. It has nice features including real time generating of reports for the heart rate and calorie usage. It is also water resistant up to 100 ft. deep. If this watch sounds good, be sure to get it from online stores right away as this model is no longer in production. Timex Ironman T5J985Some GPS watches are uncomfortable to athletes because they are so heavy. Timex manages to make it light with the Timex Ironman T5J985 Some of the GPS-specific features include the ability to check altitude and elevation data along with some speed measurements. The watch supports waypoint recording as well with a maximum capacity of up to 10 waypoints. It falls a bit short in terms of distance accuracy, but it is still a fairly valued watch costing under $280. Polar RS300X G1The Polar RS300X G1 is another nice GPS running watch Although there is a lack of a recovery heart rate mode, the watch can serve as a heart rate monitor which can optionally alarm if it rises above or below a target zone. It has enough memory to track the last 16 workouts and has a minimal water resistance of up to 50 meters. An optional accessory called the Polar S1 Foot Pod accessory is required to track distance and speed. Overall, the Polar RS300X G1 is one of the easiest GPS running watches to use. Garmin Forerunner 305Many of Garmin's Forerunner watches blow away the competition, but the Garmin Forerunner 305 deserves the most recognition for being affordably priced under $180 while offering a great list of features. It features a fully customizable display with pace calculation, distance measuring, and heart rate reading functions. The watch can connect to the PC via USB for transferring workout data as well as charging. It is extremely accurate and has a minor weakness for not being compatible with Mac OS X systems, but it is still my #1 choice. Generally, all GPS running watches offer some tempting features that were previously never found in even the best sport watches of the past. Expect to shell out some extra money, but it is definitely worth it if you choose any of these top models.
