How GPS Receivers Can Get You Where You Need to Go

GPS receivers have become a commodity over the years. Its practical traveling utilities and accurate navigation system made it a must-have for daily commuters. Centuries ago, our ancestors went through laborious calculations in navigating the world. They relied on the stars and moon to keep them from getting lost.

They drafted maps and other bulky tools just to determine the direction they should take. They made landmarks to guide their travels. Today, for at least $100 value, you get a dedicated navigation tool and personal travel companion that will take you wherever you want to go without ever getting lost.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System, which is a navigation system based on a constellation of 27 satellites orbiting the earth; 24 of which are in actual operation and 3 of which serve as extras in case of failure.

This technology basically directs people to the place they wanted to go via text or text-to-speech instructions, estimating travel time from your current location to your target location and allowing people to gain access to real time weather, traffic and news reports. To enjoy safer and shorter daily commutes, GPS receivers are more focused in helping you navigate your community, city, or country with no fuss.

Running through the details of the actual working specifications of a portable GPS system will introduce you to a complex technology that is quite easy to understand. For all GPS users, it is essential to gain a good basic understanding of the principles behind GPS functions.

To actually provide you with the directions to your target location, the system performs a triangulation method of calculations and analysis. Doing that allows the system to measure how far you are from that location.

Using the radio signals coming from the earth-orbiting satellites, you get to determine your location on the map. GPS receivers are integrated with an electronic map that allows the system to mark your current location, plan routes and inform you of the nearby points of interests such as gas stations, public offices or ATM machines.

Each of the 24 operating GPS satellites transmits their own signal, which bears their individual signatures. This way, your portable GPS device becomes capable of accurately pinpointing locations, sometimes with a deviation of 3 meters. However, to lock onto 4 radio waves coming from the satellites, your GPS receiver needs to have at least four channels.

Quality-made GPS devices operate with up to 12 channels. This way, all the necessary calculation will be accurately performed. Enough signals can be translated to receiving radio feeds from at least 5 satellites at one time.

Using the triangulation method of pinpointing locations using map coordinates, a GPS device can give you directions to wherever you want to go. After firing up its navigation utilities with enough signals, it can input your target location. At this point, the device will do the rest for you.

As you drive, its alarm features, text or text-to voice features will inform you of your approximate distance from your target location, the right turn and the right highway exits to take. It basically tells you which way to go next, until you reach your destination.

Modern GPS receivers offer features that are useful in the event that you wander off the correct route set by the device. Some are designed to automatically plan out and re-calculate a new route based on your current location. Hence, with a dedicated portable or built-in GPS, getting lost will be a thing of the past.
