Have you tried to involve your children in the growing sport of geocaching for kids?

When you ask children to hike, the usual answer would be definitely ‘no'. Then a long series of protest and moans follow that big ‘no'. But why not try something for a change. This high-tech treasure hunt should keep their interests peaked. So whenever you ask your children if they want to go geocaching, the answer would be ‘absolutely yes'. But what exactly makes this activity appealing to kids?

For one thing, children are curious creatures. If you hadn't noticed, most of the games they enjoy involves the hide-search-and-find routine. Geocaching for kids involves the hunt for caches.

Actually, this activity is educational in nature. There is a long step that must be taken to be able to achieve and locate every cache. Hence, their understanding of GPS technology, geography and map reading will be put to work. By exploring the geological features of a certain location, they get to learn and play at the same time.

Now to get started, you first need to orient your children to the use of handheld GPS receivers. Most GPS models are actually user-friendly. If your children are fond of surfing the Internet, they probably have encountered this gadget at some point.

The website will provide them with cache descriptions, which include the latitudes and longitudes of the exact cache location. Since this activity is all about the chase to achieve every cache, you must also orient your kids to what a cache actually is.

Caches are basically markers of the points being located when geocaching. They basically are physical containers, they could be a simple plastic container or a signature geocaching container, which contain small gifts or items that will interest your children. They basically serve as the reward for having found the cache.

One rule observed with geocaching for kids is that you must replace anything that you get from the cache, so it is important to remember to bring small items to trade, one for each child. Also, caches contain logbooks wherein children can sign their name and leave their comments.

Outdoor activities are not only limited to sports. Nature trip in finding caches, GPS devices and understanding coordinates are some of the features of geocaching for kids. Now, your children can enjoy cool technology with the side-effect of a little hiking exercise. Now this should keep your children interested and occupied in your next family outing.
