Just like in any game, geocaching involves the use of gadgets and devices that facilitate 21st century treasure hunts. With the use of modern GPS and navigating devices, each participant will search the world and scour locations for caches. In some cases, geocache coins are used to add elements that will make the chase feel like real-life treasure hunts.

They are basically a trackable trinket that plays a crucial role in geocaching. As the name implies, it appears like a medallion or metal coin that are made exclusively for geocaching. To make them trackable, they are usually given a unique serial number as well as website address that will help participants locate the coin using a GPS geocaching device.

The serial number carried by the coins serves as their location ID. The ID is also used in activating the coin to its corresponding website. They can be moved from cache to cache, just like a travel bug. However, to make the coins trackable, they first need to be activated.

Activating geocaching coins is simple. Regardless of its manufacturer, activation instructions are basically the same. First, search for your coin's manufacturer website. Sometimes, the website is etched on the coin, making this step easier.
