Garmin Nuvi 1690
Garmin Nuvi 1690 is the result of Garmin's efforts to fine tune its NuLink connected services. With its built-in cellular radio features for real time services such as traffic and weather updates, Nuvi 1690 offers some new features to improve your Garmin navigation experience. 4.3-inch display, text-to-speech conversion and applications, Bluetooth phone connectivity and advanced lane assist features make this Nuvi an impressive GPS device.
The physical design of Nuvi 1690 makes it easy to hold, use and mount in your car. This touch-screen device comes with a standard suction cup design that works for most car models. It is given a glossy black frame with chrome trim to complete a stylish hardware appearance. On its left side, you will see its SD card slot, a standard feature for all Nuvis. However, with Garmin Nuvi 1690, the card slot has been shrunk into the micro SD size to free internal space, giving more room for functional improvements. At the top edge, you will see its power button. Though this model does not have screen lock, you can still achieve the same effect by bringing up an onscreen menu that offers lock options, along with the actuations for necessary screen brightness and power settings. On the back panel, you will see its single speaker, mini USB port at the bottom edge and its 10-pin connector that includes a suction-cup cradle. The 1690 is given a very strong, level actuated suction cup cradle with a mini USB port to allow car charger connection. Now, let's talk about functionality. Garmin Nuvi 1690 basically adopts many of the GPS features that you see in the precious Nuvi models, but is improved with its greater connectivity features. Its wireless functionality made it accessible with voice commands, allowing you to keep your eye on the road. The Nuvi 1690 is the very first Garmin device to take full advantage of the Garmin NuLink technology. This made it able to grab online content and accurate real-time mapping for navigation updates. For instance, this device can do local search for the nearest highways, exits or gas stations using Google's search features, giving you only relevant information about your location. With this handy feature, you can automatically calculate and make necessary changes to your original route in cases of road blocks such as traffic due to inopportune road accidents. It can also provide you with other web-based services such as weather reports, movie time, flight updates, local events and even white page searches. One great thing about Nuvi 1690 is its Lane Assist feature, which helps keep track of your planned routes using visual cues on the lanes that you should take before you reach an upcoming turn. While older Nuvi models featured millions of points of interest, this unit claims to store a virtually unlimited number of up-to-date points of interest with your preloaded maps. Its easy interface allows you to easily toggle from 2D to 3D map views. Set your route with ease using its touch screen interface and see how the rest of its technologies take place. The only downside with Garmin Nuvi 1690 is that it makes the old Garmin SD cards obsolete. Also, the pop-up ads in its POI searching feature can get very annoying. Garmin's obviously tweaked GPS features in Nuvi 1690 made it a solid performing device that delivers Garmin level traveling safety, convenience and entertainment.
