DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 GPS

DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 is one of the mobile GPS devices out there that have been earning glowing reviews. For a smart buyer like you, the hype surrounding a product sure makes you skeptical about actually buying the product or joining the bandwagon. However, you might think otherwise if you start going over the PN-40's working features.

Overview

DeLorme offers a complete out-of-the-box solution to setting up and enjoying a portable GPS system with DeLorme Earthmate PN-40.

Equipped with the up-to-date DeLorme Topo USA mapping software, it gives you a full version of Topo USA technology combining desktop and GPS capabilities. All street and mapping data is stored in its 1 GB SD card, making it ideal for carrying loads of maps and supporting imagery transfers for traveling or hiking.

Given its updated DeLorme GPS features, all you need to do is read its detailed user manual to enjoy a quick start guide that will help you fully enjoy the beauty of having a reliable, accurate and portable navigation, locating and GPS applications right at your fingertips.

Features

The first notable feature is fast and high sensitivity 32-channel STMi electronics Cartesio chipset. This feature enables the device to easily and quickly acquire signals even in the most challenging GPS environment.

It is given a dual-core processor to allow instantaneous map and satellite imagery displays and redraws. It can process maps and trip data faster than other competition GPS models.

This device also supports SDHC high-capacity SD cards, which ranges from 1 GB to 32GB. Its high-data storage capacity is handy especially in saving and sharing large aerial imagery files with multiple map layers.

Unlike average GPS devices, DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 is given the 360-degrees raster rotation feature, which allows 360-degree rotation of road, building and other images to give you correct view or perspective of maps used. In addition, this device is given an accelerometer to complement its new 3-axis electronic compass, which works even while in motion or standing still.

Its sensitive barometric altimeter makes it even more reliable and accurate in providing altitude reading. What makes it even more accurate is its WAAS-enabled GPS application, which achieves accuracy within 3 meters.

Right from the box, DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 includes a 3-disc set that you can use to get the detailed hybrid topographic and street maps of the USA. It also includes a $40 certificate covering your initial downloads of supplementary DeLorme datasets such as high-resolution imagery.

Earthmate PN-40 gives you a detailed onboard base map and fast data transfers and everything else that you might need when you plan your next hike, geocache or backcountry trip.

PROS

Earthmate PN-40 is equipped with high performance GPS technology that allows multiple views of GPS location maps. It allows on-device data layering, which gives you the option to select the type of imagery when determining or tracking GPS locations. It allows easy exchange of maps and two-way transfers of tracks and waypoints with its GPS and Topo maps.

While it has a factory 1 GB internal flash memory specification, it also accommodates high-storage SD cards for backup map data. With its 1 GB internal memory, it can store up to ten tracks with 10,000 points per track, 1,000 user-defined waypoints and up to 50 routes.

CONS

Most users noticed that DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 aerial display is difficult to see without its backlight on. With that, don't be afraid to turn up the display brightness settings into full brightness to make it more visible during the day. Also, there are those that have complained of relatively short battery life. With hiking or long trips, it would be advisable to carry extra batteries.

CONCLUSION

At its $284.99, DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 gives you a complete, compact and great valued GPS that works even in the most challenging conditions. With its waterproof hardware, it meets the IEC 529 IPX7 standard ensuring that it is designed to function even in high-humidity environments or under the rain.

It works excellently even at high-vibration conditions like off-road driving. Operating temperatures range from -20 to +75 degrees Celsius. Given its competitive and advanced GPS technologies, this device makes a perfect match for off-road or jeep driving as well as hiking.
