Car Navigation Systems
Reach Your Destination

Car navigation systems and devices have become a common feature of newer models of cars. In realizing the tremendous benefits of these devices to driving safety and fuel economy, some car manufacturers have adopted its use in all of its newly released car models as their way of upgrading and updating driving safety features.

Car navigation systems will lead the driver in taking the safest and shortest route to reaching his destination. It provides him with the needed maps and navigation information to keep him informed on road conditions and even on the weather status of his target location. This way, he will be more effectively guided to the safe side of the road. Hence, the device significantly reduces the risks of road accidents.

On the other hand, guiding the driver on the shortest route, it helps save fuel. In many ways, a navigation system proves to be essential to one's daily commutes or weekend travels.

Perhaps you are already familiar with car navigation system. It is basically the automotive application of global positioning systems (GPS). An automotive navigation system is a satellite-based navigation system that uses a GPS navigation device to receive or get pertinent navigation information such as location and road data from a unit's map database.

In addition to the device's map database, it also stores a road database, which enables it to recommend the shortest possible route to reaching a particular location. It also incorporates other navigational features such as dead reckoning, which gives the device the ability to acquire data from the sensors attached to the drivetrain, gyroscope, and accelerometer. This is especially handy when driving through urban canyons, tunnels, or multipaths.

Today, modern GPS systems are carrying road and map databases and other portable navigation kits. The road database feature contains a vector map of areas with points of interest (POI). For instance, it indicates street names or numbers and house numbers as determined by the geographic map coordinates. This way, the driver can get to his desired destination guided by the street address.

As for points of interests and waypoints; fuel stations, parking, hotels and public parking may be indicated on the map display. Via internet-based communication, the device can yield free and up to date map information. They also make use of a map database, which comes in formats that are uniformly proprietary.

As the name implies, car navigation systems come readily integrated into the vehicle. It uses a simple bracket mount and is usually found on the surface of the dashboard and powered by the car cigarette lighter.

While some cars do not come with this device, deciding to mount them on the dash does not require professional installation. It may even be used as a handheld portable device.

For a multifunctional navigation tool, car navigation systems are definitely a wise investment to your traveling safety and convenience. It relieves you of the chances of getting lost and of the guesswork on the distance or time it takes to actually get to your desired destination.
