Auto GPS Navigation Systems

There are several things to look for on auto GPS navigation systems when you are considering a purchase.

At least the technology has been put in use for a few years now, so you can get some affordable navigators that are loaded with the most popular features. Knowing what to look for can be important because there are some features you will definitely want, for ease of use.

One thing to look for is the voice capability, also known as text-to-speech.

There are some of the cheaper GPS navigators that will even feature an FM transmitter so that you can hear the directions over your car speakers.

This feature allows hands-free use of the GPS, even though there will typically be a full color map and your route will be displayed on the screen of the GPS.

Another feature to consider on the auto GPS navigation systems you are looking at is the screen size. There are some larger, widescreen models and these make it much easier to look at the navigator without too much trouble. For most people, anti-glare screens are important, as well. When you are looking at the major brands of GPS navigators for your car, the screen should be an important consideration.

Multi-media options are popular for some people. The ability to plug in MP3 players, movie viewers, DVD players and video games are helpful for those that have children, especially teenagers that are riding along with you. This isn't considered a necessity by some people, but if you are purchasing a GPS navigator and have a teenager, it is a nice feature to have and it is included on many of the affordable GPS receivers for your car.

Some models of auto GPS navigation systems will have features about your trip, calculating speed, median speed and your fastest speed. It is nice to know how much longer you have to reach your destination, when traveling on the highway and many of the navigation systems will calculate and recalculate these numbers for you.

While your maps, live traffic information and other input might be based on the type of interface your system uses, most of the popular brands are similar in some of these features. It helps to read reviews about the interfaces because most of them are easy to use, but there are some that aren't as good as others and the brand of GPS system can dictate what GPS interface is used, how often the maps are updated and those types of content.

For the most part, the major brands of portable navigation systems will feature 2-D and 3-D maps in full color and will search for traffic areas to avoid, because they will often calculate driving time, in addition to the shortest mileage.

Because the technology has become more advanced, many of the cheaper auto GPS navigation systems have more features and ease of use has become a priority. When you are driving, you don't want to be trying to figure out an electronic gadget, so this is something important to consider before purchasing any GPS receiver.
